Is the World an Evil place?

When I read spiritual texts at times I come across passages where the "World" is condemened. It's described as a place that tempts man to do evil acts. It makes me think if the World is an inherently evil place or does it mean to say something else. Perhaps what is evil is excessive materialism that takes us away from Godly values.Imam Ali ('a) clarifies this confusion when he sees a man condemning this world.
